Institute of Correspondence Study was established as an evening-study faculty with studying by correspondence. The Faculty provided 9 courses, the total number of students being 1,427 people, including 913 students studying by correspondence and 514 attending evening classes.

The first graduates were given diplomas in 1972 qualifying in industrial and civil engineering and machine building technology, metal cutting machines and tools, total number - 75 people: graduates from the evening department - 41, by correspondence - 24 people.

During the period of activity the Institute has accumulated rich experience in the organization of educational process, has developed and published a large number of educational and instructional materials for correspondence students. Due to this the number of people working and studying at the faculty increased from year to year. In 2003 1930 students were studying at the Faculty, in 2007 - about three thousand, and now the number of students exceeds 3,500 people (excluding branches and representative offices of the University located in other regions of the Russian Federation).

The geography of students enrolled is also extending. Currently, correspondence courses are being taken by not only from the Central Black Earth region, but from the Northern-European part of the country, the Volga region, the Urals, Siberia, the Far East, the former Soviet Union republics and foreign countries.

Extramural studies implies self-preparing during the school year: writing tests and term papers, course projects, working with textbooks from the university library. Consultations and recommendations on how to do the assignments a student receives during the session prior to the start of the semester.

Twice a year students come for examination session.  They attend lectures, participate in laboratory and practical classes, followed by exams and tests according to the curriculum.

Correspondence student have a right for an additional paid study leave for 40 to 50 days in the academic year to take examinations, when a students prepares and defends  a final qualifying thesis and takes final state exams - 4 months.

List of subjects studied by correspondence students (in accordance with government educational standards), corresponds to the list of subjects for full-time form of tuition.

Upon completing a course a student is awarded a diploma of higher education conforming to state standard.

The institute of distance learning simultaneously provide another higher education  while students are taking their full-time course at our university or other institution of higher education, as well as a second degree course. For such students the training period is shorter. Students having secondary professional education in related speciality, are also trained in a shorter period (except for engineering majors).

Before 2007 13 courses were offered. In 2007, 7 other courses were opened, in 2009/10 academic year, training was carried out in 22 specialties, in the 2010/11 academic year - in 24 specialties.

In connection with the transition to two-level type of training, currently we offer 13 undergraduate courses (bachelor) and three majors (specialist level).
